Open Source Data Center Conference 2009: Workshop on creating collectd extensions
I will give a workshop on how to extend collectd, the system statistics collection daemon, at the Open Source Data Center Conferece 2009 which will take place in Nürnberg, Germany. The workshop, which will be held in German, gives an overview about the various ways of extending the daemon and then guides the attendees through the creation of their own plugins.

Yesterday, collectd 4.3.0-1 has been uploaded to Debian unstable. The most important changes since 3.x are (in chronological order):
- the much improved plugin infrastructure offers a lot more flexibility
- the much improved networking code offers a lot more flexibility
- the new bindings to Perl allow plugins to be written in the scripting language Perl
- the new unixsock and exec plugins allow external programs to communicate with the daemon and submit data
- integration with Nagios has been implemented
- support for flexible intervals has been added
- support to read values from SNMP enabled devices has been added
- basic support for monitoring has been added
- many new plugins
See the changelog for details.
About collectd:
collectd is a small daemon which collects system information periodically and provides mechanisms to monitor and store the values in a variety of ways. It is written in C for performance. Since the daemon doesn't need to startup every time it wants to update the values it's very fast and easy on the system and allows very fine-grained statistics.

This HDR (high dynamic range) picture was assembled from seven individual images of the city of Les Menuires, France, taken during my snowboarding vacation in January 2007. I was using Qtpfsgui (which is based on pfstools) to render the image. I am going to package those pieces of software for Debian soon.

Upgraded my laptop from Sarge to Etch
I just upgraded the Sarge system on my laptop to Etch. As I was using all kinds of selfpackaged and -backported packages from all kinds of sources a couple of minor dependency problems arised. Besides that, the upgrade went very smooth though and I did not recognize any problems so far. Good job Debian people! :-)

My new camera - a Canon EOS 30D digital SLR camera and a Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM zoom lens - arrived this morning. I'm very happy that it arrived in time for my snowboarding vacation (which starts on Saturday) as I did not order it before last Friday. Today, I bought two 2GB CF cards for it so I should be equipped pretty well for the time being :-)
